Runcorn–Widnes Transporter Bridge 1925 King George V Commemorative Cup & Saucer

A beautifully preserved piece of Cheshire history. This early 20th‑century commemorative cup and saucer celebrates the moment King George V crossed the Runcorn–Widnes Transporter Bridge in July 1925 — a landmark royal visit to one of Britain’s most impressive engineering achievements.

Built in 1905 and demolished in 1961, the Transporter Bridge once stood as the largest of its kind in the world. Today, only photographs and rare commemorative pieces like this remain. The detailed illustration captures the bridge in its prime, bordered with elegant gold trim that has survived remarkably well.

The base stamp reads “Made in England for E. Palmer, 5 Regent St, Runcorn”, confirming this as authentic local commemorative ware produced exclusively for a Runcorn retailer. These pieces were made in small quantities and are now increasingly hard to find — especially in matching sets.
